DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Archaeology at Historic Hanley Farm\nJoin us for the 14th Annual Archaeology Roadshow on Thursday\, August 20\, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Southern Oregon Historical Society's Hanley Farm just outside of Jacksonville (1053 Hanley Road). \nThis free\, family-friendly event brings together archaeologists\, historians\, Tribes\, museums\, universities\, government agencies\, and cultural organizations for an afternoon of discovery\, learning\, and hands-on fun for all ages. \nThis Year's Theme: Fire & Water\nFire and water have shaped human life for thousands of years. Explore how these powerful forces have influenced Indigenous cultures\, local landscapes\, natural resources\, and communities throughout Southern Oregon. \nThrough interactive exhibits and engaging demonstrations\, visitors will discover how archaeology helps us better understand our region's rich and diverse history. \nHands-On Activities & Exhibits\nThere's something for everyone to experience\, including:\n\nTry atlatl (spear) throwing\nPractice ceramic cross-mending like an archaeologist\nLearn how Indigenous communities used baskets for cooking\nExplore Southern Oregon's fire lookout history\nDiscover local watershed and drought history\nLearn about Oregon's historic Chinese diaspora communities\nBring up to three stone\, bone\, plant\, or historic objects for identification by archaeology and geology experts (no financial appraisals)\n\nFood & Accessibility\nFood will be available for purchase from Las Palmas Mexican Cuisine\, Mary Jane's Bento\, and Kona Ice. \nHanley Farm is an outdoor venue with gravel pathways and grassy lawns. Most exhibits and activities are located in a large\, wheelchair-accessible grassy area. ADA parking is available.
