SUMMARY:Victorian Medical Practices
DESCRIPTION:The Victorian Era was a time when doctors still lacked formal medical education\; hospitals were virtually non-existent\; epidemics wiped out large numbers of residents\; quacks peddled "cure-alls"\; and narcotics\, opium\, and poisons were the base of most medicines. Between 12n and 3pm on Saturday and Sunday\, September 19 and 20\, Historic Jacksonville\, Inc. will be offering 1-hour "Victorian Medical Practices" tours beginning every 20 minutes at Jacksonville's 1870s Beekman House Museum\, located at 470 E. California. The Beekmans were one of Southern Oregon's wealthiest and most prominent pioneer families\, but fame and fortune could not buy health care that did not exist or insulate the family from the many epidemics that raged throughout the country. Costumed docents will share the local health care available in the late 1800s\, stories of Beekman family health issues and "cures\," the impact of the discovery of germs\, and sanitation measures the family adopted.\n\nAdmission is $10\; reservations are strongly encouraged. Walk-ups will be accommodated on a space available basis. Proceeds from all tours benefit historic restoration projects. Tickets can be purchased at https://www.historicjacksonville.org/victorian-theme-tours/.\n\nhttps://storytownashland.com/events/victorian-medical-practices
